Join the session's TodaysMeet room and tell us two things about yourself:

  1. Where do you teach?

  2. Why are you here? What do you hope to learn in this session?

WHAT IS A BACKCHANNEL, ANYWAY?

A backchannel is an online conversation that happens alongside, around, and during a presentation.

  • Ask questions of presenters or other participants.

  • Take notes.

  • Respond to prompts.

HOW DOES BACKCHANNELING SUPPORT FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT?

Backchanneling can be a stream of intelligence providing a real-time snapshot of a learner's understanding, and offering the teacher an immediate opportunity to adjust instruction, respond, and clarify. Students in a backchannel are highly involved, highly active learners. They ask questions, analyze, evaluate, discuss, debate, solve problems, shift roles between teaching and learning, and reflect. Each of these ephemeral learner outputs is valuable feedback that can help the teacher---or the learner---make necessary changes and keep on course.
